Linearity and Print
In print, a linear structure is
the standard. What we expect of print texts is to start on the first
page and end on the last. The argument contained
in the printed work is also expected to begin on the first page and end
on the last. The system (print, and to some extent authors
of print material) more or less requires a beginning, a middle, and an end.
To produce a work in the print medium is to produce a linear work with a
beginning, a middle, and an end.
