Freedom and the Argument

Directly related to the freedom of the author and reader is freedom for the argument. Freedom for the argument means the ability to follow threads that might not be considered relevant to the topic at hand. Following different threads with an argument is different than taking the panoptic approach to information, in that following different threads doesn't mean you are getting the choice between general and more specific information. Rather, from the perspective of either the author's providing possibilities, or the reader's creating an argument, the argument is free to go directions that might not seem appropriate in print (because it would waste space and time).
