Freedom and Web Technology
Web technology has at its core freedom. Perhaps one of the most important and attractive features about the Web is is its independence from specific operating system or application. Most any computer operating system can run Internet and Web applications, allowing freedom to share information without regard for specific applications or operating systems.
Freedom of this kind is no different from print, in which it takes no special equipment for readers to have access to the printed page. It is, however, different from other forms of electronic writing (word processing, for example)--although it is becoming easier to share documents across software applications and platforms through filters and converters. With HTML, however, no conversions or filters are needed to read the file; only a browser is necessary.
