Competing for Attention

In the competition for convincing readers to see my point of view, I've had to share this (writing) space with others of a differing view. Certainly, I have chosen to include links to other authors and works, where others may choose to try to maintain more control by not providing links "outside" their own works. But my role in this work is to provide the possibilities. I privilege a point of view, but not at the expense of letting readers know where to go for other points of view. Including links to other authors, however, is a rhetorical move on my part. I may "lose" readers to another work, but I also have the chance to refute the claims of those who disagree with me. Furthermore, I can link to several others whose position is similar to my own, thereby confirming my view. By competing for readers' attention, I help bring them into the critical conversation, though readers control what they read by deciding which paths to follow.
