Implications for Texts

Myron Tuman argues that hypertexts aren't really text at all, but "are systems for storing and retrieving information." Perhaps without an author this notion of hypertext is accurate. But with an author to help guide the reader through the information, hypertext and the World Wide Web make a reality the postmodernist vision of what a text should be. Text on the Web is not static and unchanging, it's not limited to certain topics. Text on the Web is all the information on the Web, because that information can potentially be part of the texts created by the reader. This redefinition of the text also implies a new role for the author and reader.
