Panoptic Modes of Hypertext

The Web offers the ability to present and view both global (synoptic) and detailed (analytic) information with relative ease, in essence going both wide and deep. The reader then has the option to get the information she wants rather than only getting one version. For example, on the Web, I can cite a certain work and perhaps include a quote from that work, providing a general overview of the piece. I can also include a link to the work which allows the reader to glean information from the piece for herself. In this way, I don't privilege only my reading of a work, but offer my perspective while at the same time linking to the actual piece so that readers can decide for themselves what is important.
