The Shifting Center
The idea of a focus in hypertext is problematic.
The center of this work shifts constantly and with the whim of the reader. You can go to the General Index, the Author Index or the Topic Index and jump to any node in the work. With this ability to follow, say, a certain author or topic of your choosing through the work, it's difficult to say where the center of the work is. I've established a theme that runs through the work, but it is not always at the center of the work. For example, I discuss the problem of introductions in hypertext. That discussion
actually doesn't deal directly with argumentation on the Web. The ideas
there are, however, important elements in my argument and serve as an example
of the way argument on the Web takes place.
