The Snapshot and Context

Photographic snapshots often lack context. We get some idea about, say, a person, but it's all based on outward appearance (the person may not be smiling, but is she happy?). We have no idea what circumstances brought this person to where she is. We know nothing of the circumstances of her life other than what we see superficially in the picture.
