Intranet Development

Intranets offer organizations the opportunity to use hypertext for internal communications. With internal communications, the hypertexts can be much more open than with public Web sites (though I'm sure many organizations give employees only the information they need to perform their jobs). For example, with Intranets, readers should have the ability to make changes to another's work, or at a minimum, link information from other documents. For example, if I'm reading a document dealing with the current marketing plan and I realize I have information that would supplement the marketing document (e.g., an analysis of a competitor's product), I can access the marketing document and add a link to my analysis. Likewise, I can also provide a link to a document on the World Wide Web. Multiple perspectives (both within the organization and outside it) can easily become the norm of internal communication. Documents can weave in and out of each other with the boundaries between them melting away. With Intranets connected to the World Wide Web, I think we can eventually see the full power of hypertext.
