Profile
So who am I? What have I done? You want names, dates. Well, the following is a history of Tom Formaro's professional career.
I've been writing professionally for over eighteen years. In 1994, I started as a technical writer with CE Software. A year later at Cimtechnologies Corporation, I created their first web site. As part of completing my Master's degree in Professional Communication at Iowa State University in 1996, I wrote a thesis – Argumentation on the World Wide Web: Challenging Traditional Notions of Communication – which explores how hypertext affects the way we make arguments. It has been cited by (and linked from) a number of websites, and has been quoted in two books on the subject of the Internet and its impact on communication.
In 1996 I became the first to hold the title of Webmaster at CE Software. Following that, I managed content on several websites, from small software companies like Cygnus Solutions, to large firms such as a division of Lucent Technologies. At International Network Services (INS) I managed both internal and external websites.
As Web Programs Manager at Cygnus, I added Internet marketing to my capabilities, handling marketing programs such as direct email campaigns. As Internet Marketing Manager at INS, I managed e-mail campaigns, opt-in announcement lists, banner ad placement, newsletter sponsorships and web seminar programs. In addition to managing their external website, I created campaign landing pages, and a monthly e-newsletter.
I write for the blog, Des Moines is NOT Boring. You can check out my posts if you like.
I'm also a fiction writer. In October 2009 my wife and I co-authored and released our first children's book, Alfonso, The Christmas Pumpkin. My short stories have appeared in Akkadian, A Sexy Story, and SoMa Literary Review.
